The aspect-speed-action habit: why memorizing signal lists is not enough

Scenario two: an unexpected stop signal and the temptation to improvise

When a train encounters an aspect requiring a stop where none was expected, the rulebook's sequence is stop, secure, communicate, and then act only under defined authority. The plausible mistake is improvising a pass based on time waited.

Paper scenario: an approaching stop signal requires your train to stop, and after stopping you cannot see a conflicting movement. A plausible mistake is deciding, on your own judgment, that enough time has passed to proceed cautiously past the signal. Rulebooks generally either prohibit passing a stop signal outright or permit it only after a defined waiting period plus explicit communication with the controlling position, and the conditions are written down, not discretionary. The better decision is to follow the rulebook's exact sequence for that signal type and territory and to document what you did.

Why it matters: this scenario family trains restraint under pressure — the willingness to let the written procedure, not the elapsed time you feel is reasonable, govern the movement.
